Contacts and consent
The people your rules message, and how consent works.
Contacts are the people your rules message: cleaners, handymen, gardeners, pool services, co-hosts. Each belongs to one property.
A contact has a first and last name, an optional company, a phone number, an optional category and note, and a language for the messages they receive.
Consent — the important part
BnbWise will not message anyone who hasn't opted in. SMS and WhatsApp are separate opt-ins, and each works the same way:
- You tick the channel on the contact and save.
- They receive one automated message asking them to consent. It names you and BnbWise, and asks for automated messages in general — not one property, and not one kind of message.
- Nothing further is sent until they reply `YES`.
The contact shows exactly where it stands:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Not asked yet | Ticked, but no request has reached them — for instance it failed to send. Saving again retries |
| ⏳ Waiting | Asked, no reply yet — no task messages will go out |
| ✓ Confirmed | They agreed, with the date |
| 🚫 Opted out / declined | They said no, or replied STOP — only they can undo it, by replying START |
Anyone can reply STOP at any time to opt out, on either channel.
Consent belongs to the phone number, not to the contact
This is the part that surprises people. Consent is stored against the number, so:
- Deleting a contact does not erase their consent. Add them again with the same number and they are still confirmed — you do not ask twice, and they do not get a second opt-in message.
- An opt-out survives too, and outranks everything. Someone who replied
STOPstays opted out when re-added. - Changing a contact's phone number requires fresh consent. The new number has no consent of its own, so the contact goes back to ⏳ Waiting. Consent followed the old number; it does not transfer.
- Two contacts sharing one number share one consent. A
STOPfrom that number stops messages to both. - A reply still counts even if you deleted the contact first.
YESandSTOPare recorded against the number the moment they arrive, before we look for who sent them. Re-add that number later and it already knows.
